Chinese New Year (also known as Spring Festival) is celebrated on a different date each year. This year, Chinese New Year 2018 will take place on February 16th. The holiday moves around each year because it is based on the lunar calendar. This means that Chinese New Year can fall on any date between January 21st and February 20th.

Each year is named for one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. Each animal is an important part of ancient Chinese daily lives or has a special lucky meaning. February 16th will usher in the Year of the Dog. If you are born in the Year of the Dog, you have certain personality traits. Those born in the Year of the Dog have a strong sense of loyalty and will do anything for important people in their lives. They tend to be best suited for careers that serve others. Chinese New Year is a public holiday in several countries with large Chinese populations – Brunei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia, Mainland China, Philippines, Taiwan, and Singapore. During this holiday, business slows or halts. This includes factory production and stock market trading. Travel spikes as people travel back to their hometowns. Keep this in mind when doing business with China, as business might be delayed. The color red is an important color for Chinese New Year. It symbolizes fire, which is believed to prevent bad luck. Children are given money in red envelopes. People wear red clothes. Firecrackers are an important part of Chinese New Year celebrations. As previously mentioned, fire is believed to prevent bad luck. In Chinese culture, firecrackers were used to scare away evil spirits. Fireworks kickoff Chinese New Year at midnight. Fun fact – China produces about 90% of the world’s fireworks. A lot of people get new haircuts and buy and wear new clothes. This is to symbolize a fresh start. People do not talk about the past during Chinese New Year, as this holiday is about the future. Happy Chinese New Year 2018!
